Warranties

If you have any problems with a new or used computer you buy from me, or if you have any problems after I work on your computer, please call or email me right away. My email address is on my business card. (It is not on this site because I don't want to encourage spam.) I will get back to you promptly and take care of your problem. I promise to be co-operative about the situation. Please understand that mistakes do happen and even the best parts have a measurable failure rate. I will work with you to remedy any problems and get your computer working the way you need it to. If I am out of town or unavailable, I will have another local shop (probably On the Spot PC) take care of it and I will pay the bill.

This is the warranty: New computers and parts, as well as my workmanship, will be free from defect for one year from the date of purchase or delivery. Used parts will be free from defect for six months. If a problem arises during that period, I will go to any reasonable lengths, including replacing parts and working on the computer extensively, to solve the problem. Standard exclusions apply. Many parts come with longer manufacturer warranties, in which case you can return parts to their manufacturers even after the warranty from me expires. In some cases, warranty service may require sending away for replacement parts, in which case you may be without a working computer for a brief time. I will endeavour to make such delays as short as possible, and to get advance replacement parts whenever I can. New notebooks are covered under warranty from my distributor, ASI, and in some cases they may require that the computer be sent to California for service. If your computer has to be sent away for service, I recommend removing the hard drive so you can hold on to it.

In repair work, I sometimes encounter situations where the real solution is considerably more involved than the initial attempt to solve the problem, and additional charges for parts and labor may be involved. I strive to be as fair as possible in these situations, and to discuss the various possibilities with you in advance.

Extended warranties are available on new computers. For desktops, I charge an extra 10% for a 2-year warranty, or an extra 20% for a three-year warranty. For notebooks, ASI sets the price of the extended warranty. In my opinion, an extended warranty on a desktop may or may not be a good deal; on a notebook, it is a good idea. Sometimes, ASI offers an extended warranty free of charge as a promotion on some of their notebooks.

Exclusions:
Re-infection with a virus or spyware, subsequent repair performed by someone else not authorized to do warranty service for me; non-standard modifications, overclocking; abuse, neglect, water/liquid damage, dropping the product, etc.; damage from power surges or other power quality problems; shipping damage (from shipping the product after you buy it from me/after I work on it), fire, flooding, acts of nature or war; any other cause not related to a defect in the product or workmanship; consumables (e.g., ink cartridges), accessories under $20 (e.g., standard power cables), my travel costs outside of Corvallis/Philomath, or return shipping charges (typically under $15 for desktop parts). Notebook batteries are only covered for one year, regardless of the length of the warranty on the rest of the computer. In no event will I be held liable for loss of data, but I promise to make protecting your data my top priority. In no event will I be held liable for more or expected to incur costs greater than the original purchase price and/or service charge. This warranty is not a money-back guarantee, but rather a promise to fix any problems that arise.

In the excluded situations, I am definitely willing to work on your computer and fix it - I just cannot cover these situations (which are generally beyond my control) under warranty. If your computer is damaged by a problem with the electricity, contact Pacific Power or your power company. If you have homeowner's, renter's, or business insurance, some computer problems (e.g., water damage from flooding) may be covered in your policy; check with your insurance company.

If you spill liquid in your computer, unplug it, turn it off immediately, and take out the battery (if it is a notebook); let it dry completely for at least 3 days before using it! If you can't get it to turn off, hold down the power button for four seconds. Always use a surge protector. If you can't get on the internet, unplug the power from your router and/or your cable/DSL modem for thirty seconds.
